Minneapolis City Council Member President Barbara Johnson was first elected in 1997. She is beginning her 3rd term of office, her first as President of the Council. She served as Chair of the Ways & Means Committee in her previous term.

Council Member Johnson is a registered nurse. She worked as a mental health nurse for most of her nursing career for the US Veterans’ Administration, Fairview Hospital and Hennepin County Medical Center.  Her first public service was as a member of the City’s Public Health Advisory Commission.

Johnson served on the Metropolitan Parks & Open Space Commission for 18 years. She also was a member of the Mississippi National River and Recreational Area Commission, appointed by the Secretary of the Interior.

Since being elected to the Council she has served on St. Anthony Falls Heritage Board, the Transportation Advisory Board, the Minneapolis Employees Retirement Fund, the Bottineau Boulevard Partnership and the Northside Partnership.

She represents the Northwest corner of Minneapolis, all of the Camden area and a portion of the Jordan neighborhood. Her present committee assignments include Transportation and Public Works, and Public Safety and Regulatory Services. 

Council Member Johnson and her husband Duane have three grown daughters.
