2006-2010 Capital Projects Plan
The MBC submits capital projects proposals to the City of Minneapolis, Capital and Long-range Improvement Committee (CLIC) and Hennepin County, Capital Budgeting Task Force (CBTF) processes. The following MBC projects were approved for the 2006-2010 budgeting cycle:
• Mechanical and Life Safety Systems Upgrade Project This project will improve fresh air and temperature control, and implement life safety components in the City Hall and Courthouse building. This is a multi-year project with funding requested beyond the current budget cycle. This project is funded through 2013.
• Interior Court Roof Waterproofing The MBC will coordinate waterproofing work on the Interior Court roof with the Mechanical and Life Safety Systems Upgrade project. The roof will be completely replaced to alleviate long-standing water leakage issues. This project is funded for the 2006-2010 capital budget cycle.
• Tower and Interior Court Elevator Upgrade Elevators located in the Clock Tower and Interior Court of the building are outdated and obsolete. This project will modernize the cabs, shafts, electronic controls and elevator machine rooms. This project is funded for the 2006-2010 capital budget cycle.
• Clock Face Structural Repair The 50-year old porcelain faces of the building's clock have rusted due to weathering and deterioration. Cast iron support structures for the clock have already been shored up. The mechanism, bearings and other clock components are due for a total retrofit. The clock hands, which exceed 12 feet in length, will be removed, repaired and rebalanced. This project is funded for the 2006-2010 capital budget cycle. In addition to capital funding, the Municipal Building Commission received a grant from the Minnesota Historical Society Grants-in-Aid Program.
