1973 The Municipal Building Commission rules that the fourth and fifth floors be reserved for the county jail.
1974 The Minneapolis City Council designates the City Hall and Courthouse a Heritage Preservation site.
A new jail intake area and a security garage are built to the plans of Ellerbe Associates.
1976 The Fifth Street entry is altered to accommodate a two-story, glassed-in rotunda and a tunnel to the new Government Center, again to the plans of Ellerbe Associates.
