The pneumatic bell-chiming system is replaced by an all-electric system, and a fifteenth bell is added.
1973
The Municipal Building Commission rules that the fourth and fifth floors be reserved for the county jail.
1974
The Minneapolis City Council designates the City Hall and Courthouse a Heritage Preservation site.
A new jail intake area and a security garage are built to the plans of Ellerbe Associates.
1976
The Fifth Street entry is altered to accommodate a two-story, glassed-in rotunda and a tunnel to the new Government Center, again to the plans of Ellerbe Associates.
